EMMARR STUD

Is a small stud aiming to breed  true type Welsh Mountain Ponies.

WELSH MOUNTAIN PONIES SECTION A

We are a small stud situated in the beautiful Talley Valley being just 50 mins drive from the famous RWAS show ground.  I have had a passion for horses all my life and started life  in a riding school where l learnt the basics of riding.  I used to have hourly free horse rides in return for cleaning tack and mucking out stables.  I went on to be a head lad in a local riding school and then later went into racing working for Major Peter Cazalet who was the Queen Mother’s horse trainer..  It was during my time here that l learnt how to do things properly from having clean stables and tidy yard  to general management of the horse.  However we are always open to learning more and l have to say l have never stopped learning,  the knowledge some long term Welsh breeders share is incredible, and l am grateful for all the help everyone has given us.   Special thanks also go to all concerned with the High Horse Showing Society  who have been  great educators, friendly and most of all will always share their knowledge.

At the age of 16yrs l bought my first Point -To- Pointer after saving my wages for a whole year..! .  Point to Pointing was my life throughout my  teenage ,20’s 30’s years.  It wasn’t until year 2000  l decided to call it a day after  30+ glorious years.  It was at this time in 2000 we moved to beautiful Wales from the South Coast of England. We bought our first Welsh Mountain Pony from Llanybydder  sales as a companion pony.  It was from this point that both Michael and l  recognised and fell in love with these beautiful mischievious, hardy breed.  On buying our first few Welshies we also bought  a coloured cob type called Brenyn -Yr-Maes however it was certainly trial and error, having bought a Doylan, Togram, Penboeth and a Friars but we soon acknowledged that we were drawn more to the hill pony type .  A five year period elapsed, we learnt as much as we could, we went and watched at several shows, watching out for stock we liked for future reference.  We also needed to have some idea of what we were meant to be doing before we decided to start a Welsh Pony Stud.  We wanted to invest in what we considered to be good , well bred quality stock. It was so noticable the stock we liked and the stud progressed from there.  Since then it has always been our aim to breed ponies of true Welsh Mountain type, with good conformation, temperament, movement and with that certain Welsh attitude.  I think now we are totally addicted to this wonderful breed and can never see life without a Welsh Mountain Pony.

MINIATURE SHETLAND PONIES

There were many reasons  both Michael and l decided to get into miniature shetlands but l guess if we are  being honest with ourselves, age  has a lot to do with the reasons.  Michael has been around horses and ponies  since we met up  and l personally have been around horses all my life, (see above for more detail of experiences  in the Welsh pony section).  Our love for the equine is unique and unrivalled, and we would welcome anyone to come at any time  to check the health of the ponies and environment.  We try our very best to give them everything whilst encouraging  a natural way of living.. Our ponies will be out  everyday making use of our 50 acre property  with 10 acres of woodland ..how fun that is going to be…   However,  in very severe weather they will be in at night  and the ocassional day.  Being new to the Shetland pony world we look forward to a new learning experience  and are willing to accept guidance and help from anyone willing to share.   l guess it is easy to note the resemblance and the similarities we would look for, which  are not too different from  to our own Welsh ponies.

We hope to develop some good friendship  and learn from the people who are more knowledgable then ourselves.  We look forward to our venture into Miniatures and hope to see many people  around  in the 2023 show season, but in the meantime l will come and watch and learn  if my grey matter allows it !!!!!

SO YOU MIGHT ASK WHAT AM l LOOKING FOR  IN A MINIATURE SHETLAND PONY

I like ponies that are small and would need to be  under 34inches,  colour is  just that and does not tell me the quality of a pony  so my focus will always be on quality over colour.  The ponies must have a sensible alert head that is small but in proportion with the body, l prefer the smaller pretty headed type as opposed to the longer head.  I like small ears that are well set on the head  and the pony should look happy and alert.. the ponies should have a dark  bold  intellegent eye and looks interested  with plenty width between the eyes  for me a sign of intelligence.    A good jaw line is also paramount.   For me these little ponies should have a good broad front  and strong chest,  a nice sloping shoulder  with a good wither.  I like a pony with well sprung ribs allowing for plenty of heart room especially with thoughts of breeding in the future,  they must have a good solid backend and a high tail set,  good flat bone, short  balanced cannon bones , and their  back legs should have good shaped hocks. Nothing is more pleasing to see than a good straight free moving action  almost cartwheel like , and they must track up well in all gaits.

THE MUSTS

  1. Resemble what breed it actually is
  2. Have the best of confirmation
  3. Movement  that is appropriate…..  not to lack lustre but not too exaggerated ….. must show vitality and  a happy way of going.
  4. Everything else comes after

A Place of Dreams

By Teresa Gee who
(Sadly passed away 1/1/17)

Wading through a sea of gold, striding  out onto green

One of the most wondrous sights, ever to be seen.

From barn to field come rain or shine, the little gems shine bright

Their massive personalities defy their modest height.

A tiny head will look your way a little ear is pricked

Big bright eyes watching, waiting and fingers will be licked.

A welcome from both man and beast don’t be misunderstood

You’ll not get better anywhere than the great Emmarr Stud.
